At 19, Shaun White couldn’t have done this. Fresh off his first of two Olympic gold medals, the iconic snowboarder had opportunities to extend his brand beyond his contest results.
But at 29, the veteran athlete is finding balance with business obligations that have given him a new role in the sport while still competing in it. White’s celebrity long ago transcended snowboarding – his role in the band, Bad Things, helps there, too – but now his influence on the sport has expanded.
The second Air + Style Los Angeles runs Feb. 20-21, giving White another chance to make a cultural impression with the competition series he owns a majority stake in and seeks to expand. And Mammoth Resorts announced late last month that White will be an investor in the mountain he trained on as a child, focusing his efforts on Big Bear Mountain Resorts.
For White, who has his eyes on a fourth Olympics in 2018, it’s been a fun balancing act.
“When you’re asking a 19-year-old that just won the Olympics to come to a bunch of meetings, that’s a pretty big ask,” White said in an interview with USA TODAY Sports on Thursday. “I never really felt the obligation or the time or the wisdom to go about doing something like that, but now that I’m older and I have a great team behind me.”
Nvivo 10 free download crack internet. White bought Air + Style in 2014, seeking to extend the event’s reach to the United States. The long-standing event - which combines a big air snowboard competition with a music, fashion and arts festival – has stops in Innsbruck, Austria, and Beijing. It first came stateside last year at the Rose Bowl.
It was a learning experience that White says helped the event improve for this year, when it will be held at EXPO Park at LA Coliseum. More food and art options have been added, and White is excited about a musical acts that include J. Cole, Incubus, Kaskade, Haim and All Time Low.
Fans will also get to go to the top of the 16-story snowboard jump. That too has changed, with snow being made in tents that go over the jump to improve snow quality.
“It’s definitely going to be the full show that everybody wants and the artists can perform at their highest level,” White said. “For the people attending the event, it’s gonna have that same charm as last year, but much bigger, much louder and there’s more things to do.
“I think people were amazed (last year),” he added. “They came and were like, ‘Oh, I’m going to see this band,’ and they got blown away because they’ve never seen snowboarding up close before or even seen snowboarding before.”
The event features the sport’s top athletes, including Max Parrot, Mark McMorris and Yuki Kadono, the medalists at last month’s X Games.
While LA brings the mountain to the city, Air + Style’s expansion in 2017 will include stops at Mammoth Mountain, Laax, Switzerland, and Secret Garden, China. Those events will include halfpipe and slopestyle competitions along with the music and arts integral to Air + Style events.
White has seen a need to expand to a tour-type format as other events have cut back.
“This really now unites the rest of the sport, all those other disciplines. And I’ll probably be competing in the halfpipe next year. It’s great,” White said. “It’s growing for us, and the riders are so supportive of what I’m trying to do not only for Air + Style but the sport of snowboarding itself. It’s a really interesting time.”
He’ll balance that with everything else on his busy schedule. Like most things White does, his investment in Mammoth is hands-on. He’ll be looking to improve the experience there, setting up camps for riders that allow them to train on the same equipment and courses he does as well as improving things off the mountain with better restaurants, lodging and nightlife.
“It’s tough, but I’d also like to say that my career as a snowboarder, I’m still very serious,” White says.
White won the Dew Tour in December and was slated to compete in the Laax Open last month before he had to return home because of the death of a friend. He said he probably will compete in a few more events this season, including the U.S. Open next month.
But first, he’s got to prioritize his role as organizer in the sport before getting back to riding.
“It’s very difficult,” White said. “I should probably be practicing for the next event right now but I’m here hosting. It’s great. I get fulfillment in different ways.”

ASPEN — There’s a big hole in these Winter X Games.
Where’s Shaun White?
Zelda patch. “He wasn’t invited,” said Danny Chi, the spokesman for the ESPN-owned Winter X Games.
The absence of the two-time Olympic gold medalist with 23 X Games medals — 15 of them gold, the most in X Games history — over 16 years of Winter X Games appearances has become glaring.
“We’re not going to go into details,” Tim Reed, an ESPN vice president who runs day-to-day X Games operations, said in an interview with The Denver Post on Friday.
In response to a question about whether White would be invited back, Reed said: “We have 20 years of history together. He’s a tremendous athlete. At this point, there’s nothing more to say than that.”
White scored a perfect 100 in the X Games halfpipe in 2012 and won again in 2013, marking his eighth X Games halfpipe gold.
X Games organizers said they would not discuss their invitation process. Numerous e-mails to White’s representatives have not been returned.

Since making his X Games debut in 2000 as a 13-year-old and finishing ninth in the halfpipe, he had returned to Aspen every year except 2014, when he opted out to prepare for the 2014 Olympics.
White is the biggest name in snowboarding and the golden goose for the X Games as one of the event’s biggest attractions.
And he’s on fire this season. He won the Dew Tour halfpipe contest in December with back-to-back double-cork 1080s and his signature double McTwist 1260. After he won, he stayed on the course and signed autographs and posed for photos with a long line of fans.
“He hung out until the last person got their autograph,” said Dew Tour announcer Jonathan Oetken. “He was having fun. He was on fire. He rode so well and he was so relaxed.”

He was training in Canada’s Calgary ski area this month, and made news Thursday outside of Aspen. The 29-year-old announced he was becoming a co-owner of Mammoth Resorts, the Southern California ski area that recently spent $38 million to acquire neighboring Snow Summit and Bear Mountain ski areas. White, in an announcement, said he would be focusing on Bear Mountain.
White joins longtime chief executive Rusty Gregory, Denver’s Intrawest Corp. and private equity firm Starwood Capital as an owner of the resort, which hosts as many as 800,000 visits a year.
White started riding Mammoth as a 6-year-old. He threw his first trick at Mammoth. He competed for the first time at the resort.
“It’s amazing to me that I’m now an owner of the mountain where I grew up riding,” he said in the news release. “I’m going to help make it better than ever and I’m thrilled with the opportunity.”
White’s 2-year-old Air + Style event takes over the Rose Bowl next month in Los Angeles with a big-air contest and music festival.
