BS Zelda no Densetsu(BSゼルダの伝説?, lit. BS The Legend of Zelda)was a game released for the Satellaview attachment for the Super Famicom in Japan. It was based on the originalThe Legend ofZelda for the NES. Unlike the originalZelda game, this version had a different direct sequelcalled BS Zelda no DensetsuKodai no Sekiban (which was based on The Legend ofZelda: A Link to the Past).
Not happy with dubbin the original BS Zelda events (the 'BS' stands for 'Broadcast Satellaview', so stop sniggering at the back), the same group of dedicated fans has at long last released the.
BS stands for Broadcast Satellite.Using this add-on gamers could download the game from Japan's BSSatellite system and save it onto either the base unit’s memory oronto a BS-X Special Broadcast Cassette.

Gameplay
The gameplay was largely unchanged from the original game,[1] but afew differences exist which make the experience distinctlydifferent. One of these differences is that the maximum number ofrupees allowed a playerwas increased to more than a thousand (rather than 255 as inThe Legend of Zelda). The overworld was altered from an 8by 16 map to an 8 by 8, although an effort to make Map 1 relativelycomparable in terms of general landscape features to the overworldin The Legend of Zelda is apparent. As in the TheLegend of Zelda's Second Quest, dungeons are again completelydifferent. This game is sometimes referred to as a 'Third Quest',in reference to The Legend ofZelda's Second Quest. The Map2 version could thus be considered the 'Fourth Quest'. Carrying onthe tradition initiated in the Second Quest where the dungeon maplayouts spelled 'ZELDA', Third Quest layout spells 'St.GIGA' andthe Fourth Quest spells 'NiNtENDO'.
The clock
The game was played in real-time. An onscreen clock showed thecurrent time, and at various times on the clock certain eventswould happen. The game pauses for a moment before making a change.Sometimes the enemies are killed or stunned, sometimes a fairyappears, and occasionally the player is granted unlimitedquantities of one of their items for a limited time. Bombs, boomerangs and candles can all be auto-upgraded this way, and willnever run out of ammunition until the clock reaches the endingvalue, at which point the player’s bombs are returned to the amountthey had before the unlimited amount was activated, or theboomerang will downgrade, or the candle will turn from red back toblue.
Presentation
The game was divided into four weekly episodes. These episodeswere played live, at the same time as a video game tips show wasrunning on the satellite network (it probably contained ads andsuch to promote the games currently being played). The downloadtime for each episode was typically around seven minutes.
Characterselection
Legend Of Zelda Bs Rom
The player could configure their name and gender in the Satellaviewgame-selection interface. This then carried across to the game. Thecharacters themselves are nameless in-game. In actuality, they areSatellaview's mascots, and 'come from another world' in this game. These two characters would later reappear in BS Zelda no DensetsuKodai no Sekiban, known as the Heroes of Light.
SoundLink
BS Zelda's implementation of SoundLink was significantly different fromthat in BS Zelda no DensetsuKodai no Sekiban. When the clock hit certain times thegame would pause to display a message reading 'Listen closely'(耳をすませ? ), and the player would hear the voiceof the narrator (Kiyoshi Kobayashi - apparentlyplaying the part of the Old Man) grant the player a superpower orgive a hint or suggestion. These paused periods of narration areabout thirty seconds long. After that time the text disappears andgameplay resumes as before. Voice talent was also used for thecharacters Princess Zelda (Naomi Fujisawa) and Ganon (SeizōKatō).
Due to the fact that the original SoundLink recordings no longerexist in public circulation, modern emulation-based restorationprojects display the text of the narration that originallyaccompanies the 'Listen closely' sign. As a result, modern emulatedversions notably lack this sign as well as any of the originalSoundLink features.
Freegifts
In one issue of Nintendo Online Magazine, there is some allusionto players with good scores receiving free gifts.[2] Thearticle states that players received a password that recorded thedegree of completion of that day's featured dungeon. Players wouldthen submit this password to the company, with players whocompleted the most receiving prizes. Due to costs involved, it isassumed that the prizes were Gashapon-style trinkets; manyZelda-themed merchandise items with unknown origins doexist, and some of these may originate from here. As a player hadto be subscribed to the St.GIGA network to play, their mailingaddresses would be known, and it is quite possible that these giftswere mailed. Still, information on this program has been verydifficult to obtain.

Emulation
Due to the live nature of the game in its original incarnation, the game's ROM could notbe played properly on emulators. Many hackers have since created patchesthat removed the game's download pauses and time limits, piecedtogether all four episodes and given the game a title screen andfile selection screen (both of which are reminiscent of the titlescreen and file selection screen from The Legend ofZelda), all of which has ultimately allowed BS Zelda to beplayed as like a traditional, non-Satellaview game. Some patcheshave even replaced the game's protagonist with Link himself, or allow theplayer to select Link or one of the game's original characters viathe file selection screen.
